4H Rules

The Canada Department of Agriculture supports the Junior Farmer Division with the aim of:

  • a) Encouraging organized boys and girls club work in the district
  • b) To improve the educational value of the Fair
  • c) To develop better farmers and breeders
  • d) To stimulate the interest of young people in the Fair, through them to interest a greater number of adults.

The exhibition is open to all boys and girls who are members of Calf Clubs or Junior Farmers Clubs organized under the auspices of the Federal and Provincial Department of Agriculture.

RULES & REGULATIONS:

1. HEALTH RULES: Refer to Dairy Cattle regulation #9 when registering.
2. In order to take part in the competition, contestants must be between the ages of 9 and 21
(Proof of age required) as of 01/01/2017.
3. ENTRIES CLOSE FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 2017 at 17H00. Entries after this date will be
charged $10.00 per head. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 2017.
Entries must include birth date, full name of contestant and calf plus a photocopy of the
Pedigree and metal ear tag number are required
4. All club exhibits must be on the Fair Grounds by 8h00 on Friday, August 11, 2017.
5. Inter-Club show will take place on Friday August 11, 2017.
6. No reference material of any kind will be permitted by any contestant while judging classes
are in progress.
7. Each contestant must be dressed in white to exhibit calf.
8. In showmanship classes, each contestant must use his/her own calf to show in calf classes.
9. All exhibitors who register before August 4 will receive an exhibitor’s pass and also, after
showing your calf in class, each member will receive one (1) week-end pass for the rides.
10. Minimum of 4 head is required for a class.

  • 8:00 am - Arrival of calves
  • 9:00 am - Registration
  • 10:00 am - Open Cattle Judging Competition, Forage and Cereal Grain Judging Competition, Tractor awareness Competition
  • 12:00 pm - Calf classes and Showmanship

 

Judging Competition Prizes

Cattle Judging Competition: $10.00 to each participant.
Forage Judging Competition: $10.00 to each participant PLUS a cash prize to the winning club, best score from the top 5 contestants from each club will be used to decide the winner. $20.00, $15.00, $10.00, and $5.00.
Tractor Awareness competition: $10.00 to each participant
Regular Calf Class Prizes: $10.00 to each participant
Showmanship Class Prizes: $10.00 to each participant

Holsteins
Class 1 – Female Calf, born March 1/17 – May 31/17
Class 2 – Female Calf, born Dec. 01/16 – Feb. 28/17
Class 3 – Female Calf, born Sept. 1/16 – Nov. 30/16
Class 4 – Summer Yearling, born June 1/16 – Aug. 31/16
Class 5 – Junior Yearling, born Mar. 1/16 – May 31/16
**Ayrshire – Calf born after March 1/17
**Brown Swiss – Calf born after March 1/17
**Jerseys – Calf born after March 1/17
** Minimum of 4 head is required for a class.

SHOWMANSHIP:

Each contestant must use own calf as shown in calf class.

PEE WEES ONLY:

Boys and girls 8 yrs old and under – Showmanship – sponsored by interested parties.

Highest aggregate score in Junior Farmer activities at Huntingdon Fair and showing an Ayrshire calf, donated by Huntingdon-Howick Ayrshire Inter-Club competition.
Highest aggregate score in Holstein Inter-Club competition at Huntingdon Fair donated by Huntingdon-Ormstown Holstein Club.
For Showmanship – 9, 10, 11 & 12 yrs old – The ‘Martin Dineen Memorial’
For Showmanship – 13-15 yrs old – donated by Q.Y.F.
For Showmanship – 16-21 yrs old – donated by H.A.D. Sommerville
For Grand Champion Showman – The ‘John McCallum Memorial’, donated by the McCallum family.
For High Aggregate Showmanship & Judging – donated by Junior Farmer committee.
For the winning group of 5 calves exhibited by a recognized Young Farmers Club, donated by International Stock Foods – one group per each club.

SPECIAL JUDGING COMPETITION PRIZE:

Donated in memory of Thomas Quinnell Sr., $25.00 to the club, a team of 3, one from each age group (one team per club), participants to be named at time of registration. Participants must be showing a calf.
